RD&D projects

The research, development and demonstration (RD&D) activities at SKB range from basic research to practical testing of disposal equipment. Much effort has been devoted to process understanding, development of techniques and methods as well as demonstration of functionality. The RD&D activities, which have been led by SKB, have in many cases been performed in national and international cooperation. SKB has over time developed the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, the Encapsulation Laboratory and the Multipurpose test facility for the purpose of supporting safety assessments, design and technology development as well as licence applications.

Opportunities for participation in SKB’s RD&D projects now as well as in the near future will be advertised below as well as through emails. To learn more about upcoming project opportunities, please contact magnus.holmqvist@skb.se or erik.thurner@skb.se.

Current project opportunities:

Invitation to participate in the retrieval of The Full-Scale
Prototype Repository at Äspö HRL

The first canisters in the Prototype Repository were installed at Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory in 2001 making it the longest running full-scale, multi-barrier repository experiment in the world. SKB has finally started the planning process for excavation of the prototype repository and is now inviting other organisations to participate in this unique project for evaluating geological disposal.
